Shire Woodworking Club – July 2018 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – July 2018 Newsletter posted below.   Quite a lot about the clubs 20th anniversary, I arrived at the Maxi Day late so missed the cake cutting and speeches. Did manage to win $15 in the raffle which was the first win for a long time.  Quite interesting demo on wheel making, I have one of the good cutters at home but have only tried it with pine or other light woods; sounds like it will go better with a dense wood. The clamps for the drill press are a great idea; I have already be[...]

Something different – Polymer Clay

Posted In: Polymer Clay | Wood Turning
Something different - Polymer Clay. I attended a Polymer Clay workshop at the local community college last weekend; I couldn't pass on the 60% course discount! Nadine from Own Sweet Time was the tutor and had thought only 5 would attend but 10 of us used the last minute discount to register.  The class was mainly about Jewelry but I took along some pen, razor and key ring tubes to see if they would work. Nadine also sent very detailed notes regarding everything she covered with appropriate links.&n[...]

Shire Woodworking Club – 20th Year Anniversary in June 2018

Shire Woodworking Club – 20th Year Anniversary in June 2018. I have been a member for about 15 of these years and have seen huge changes in the members and the equipment available. We were always considered as inferior at the Cubby House Woodturners; a bit strange for me as I am still a member of both clubs. While we were based there we didn't have many members who were only woodworkers but now there are less than 10 of the 70 members that are also members of the woodturners.   Also written up in a Sh[...]

Workshop Update – Slightly Different Pen

Have been experimenting with my resin casting pressure pot and decided a good test would be for the Facebook Group - Australian Pen Turners slimline challenge. The only criteria was that you had to use a slimline mechanism.    This is my submission:   I cast cake toppings in resin for the bottom and dyed some light timber I had for the top piece (see photo below for the timber).  I didn't feature in the overall winners but received this for creativity:  Some progress shots: Used ca g[...]

Shire Woodworking Club – June 2018 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – June 2018 Newsletter posted below. I wasn't able to attend the May Maxi Day so all new to me. Great to see Doug celebrating his 97th birthday at the club.  Would be great if the club can get a grant to buy a laser cutter / engraver; looks complicated though!  Some good show and tell items and photos from the box making demonstration Another follow up on the Turps article from previous months with a bit more information.  [...]

Shire Woodworking Club – May 2018 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – May 2018 Newsletter posted below. Article about workshop demo; the demonstration was good but hard to convey in a article. The table lamps presented were good and quite diverse. Some good show and tell items plus me showing my small train set plus some olive pens where I imported the timber from Jerusalem. Some members were keen on the pens but no-one showed  the money!    Follow up on the Turps article from last month with a bit more information.[...]

Workshop Update – More Trains

Posted In: Toy Making | Wood Turning
After I finished my last years plank entry I bought some additional plans from Toys and Joysand the kits to go with them. These are my attempts at the Little Choo Choo: As easy to make two but I missed out the little car for the second one as not comfortable selling this as the wheels are a bit small.      Details: Little Choo Choo    Finished Model is approximately 22" long.   I have started on this set but the bases need shaped as quite a but wider. TJ Choo Choo[...]

Shire Woodworking Club – April 2018 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – April 2018 Newsletter posted below. Article showing latest delivery to Sydney Children's Hospital with good photos. A lot of variety in the items delivered; nothing of mine as I have been a bit slack.    Profile of one of our youngest members @42 years; doesn't drop the average much as weighted too heavily at older members. Some photos included from the Sydney Royal Easter Show, some additional photos that I took:   A lot of good show and tell entries; I ha[...]

Workshop update – pen organisation and disassembly

Posted In: Wood Turning | Workshop
Workshop update - pen organisation and disassembly. Have been turning some different pens recently and found that I didn't know what blanks I had worked on; the plastic drawers as below are good to keep kits and bushings in but also including blanks was a bit messy.      I saw something similar the the stand below on Instagram and thought it was good as you can see the quantity for each type. Looks a bit fuller now plus I need to add additional categories; a bit scary seeing all the types of kits a[...]

Shire Woodworking Club – March 2018 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – March 2018 Newsletter posted below. Main article was on the visit by representatives from Feast watson and Cabots demonstrating their products. This was very good and well attended.  A good chart showing the colours is included. The plank competition is coming up again; like last year it will be half a plank and must be made into a toy. I will enter but not sure at this stage what I will make, perhaps a smaller toy garage.   Some good show and tell entries; I have been a[...]
