Southland Woodworkers Guild Exhibition in Invercargill

Southland Woodworkers Guild Exhibition in Invercargill

I was lucky to be in Invercargill to see an exhibition by the Southland Woodworkers Guild recently. I know a couple of the members but have never managed to get to any of their meetings or seen any of their displays. Very impressed by the quality and variety of goods on display. Some were available for sale as marked but others only for display purposes. Good mix of woodturning and woodworking.

Shire Woodworking Club – October 2017 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – October 2017 Newsletter posted below. Unfortunately 2 long time members passed away in the last month, Alan Davis hadn’t been able to make it for a long time but Ray Schofield was only around 2 months ago. Ray was the next youngest member when I joined so I knew him quite well as he was only a few years older than me. His brain tumour operation a couple of years ago seemed to have been a…

Workshop Update – turning, selling & purchasing

Plank Competition I have spent a lot of my time on my Shire Woodworking Club plank entry; but did manage to finish it on time. See separate post regarding the making of the train set below:    Pen Sales Sold a pen out on eBay out of the blue; I had forgot that I had posted pens for sale here and had a moment of panic that I had already sold or given away the pen. Luckily I still had…

Wooden train set for Shire Woodworking Club 2017 pine plank competition

Wooden train set for Shire Woodworking Club 2017 pine plank competition

This was my entry in the 2017 Shire Woodworking Club pine plank competition: We received a dressed radiata pine plank (approximately 1500mm x 290mm x 19mm or equivalent). The main rule is: There is no restriction on the number, size, type and design of the entry providing it is used to make one or more toys for the Club. It is to be made predominantly from the timber supplied. Quite a while ago I had bought a set of full size…

Shire Woodworking Club – September 2017 Newsletter

Shire Woodworking Club – September 2017 Newsletter posted below. Good turnout for the AGM, I am on the toy making subcommittee again.  Good to see that all positions were filled before the AGM; definitely not the case in most clubs. The main committee does a great job and are very committed.   Overview of the years activities; I didn’t realise that we had delivered 1193 items to the Randwick Children’s Hospital plus the Christmas charity donations. I delivered 10 toy…

The Cubby House Turners Woodies Inc – August 2017 Newsletter

Current Cubby House Turners Woodies club newsletter below. Great picture of Ray Elyard in his workshop; I have never managed to create as many streamers during one turning. Geoff Tong showing his segmented segmented lidded box that he presented at the Shire Woodworkers Club the previous week.  Some good looking boxes for show and tell items but still need more general woodwork items. They are getting back into the themed maxi days which I think is a good idea as…

Workshop Update – Photography experimenting

Workshop Update – Photography experimenting

David, my wife’s 13 year old nephew recently got a new canon EOS camera for his birthday so yesterday I setup my small light box for him to experiment with.   I setup my three lights for him to use; the front one is on a tripod which makes it very flexible. I also provided him with various backgrounds as shown in the photos of keyrings, these are lining I have used for boxes. Since it was set up I…

Shire Woodworking Club – August 2017 Newsletter posted below.   Huge 445 items in toy delivery to  the Child Life and Music Therapists at Sydney Children’s Hospital on Wednesday 20th July. Good article showing numbers of types of toys plus some items painted by the children. I didn’t have any items in this delivery but dropped off 12 wooden trucks at the maxi day.   I am featured on page 8 displaying my stabilised burl turnings of a pen and…

Workshop Update – a bit of turning and buying

Workshop Update – a bit of turning and buying Helped out at a working bee / wood clearout at Shire Woodworking club during the week and was able to restrict myself to only bring a small amount home. The PNG Rosewood block has some major cracks so will need to be cut into pieces for turning. The narrow pieces are oak and I am intending to use these in a chopping board (I have not made one yet). can’t remember…
