The Cubby House Turners Woodies Inc – September 2017 Newsletter

Current Cubby House Turners Woodies club newsletter below; it is a bit light this month! Interesting article about a visit to a local school   Some good looking turnings for show and tell items but unfortunately no general woodwork items; for most members it is still a woodturning club.

Workshop Update – turning, selling & purchasing

Plank Competition I have spent a lot of my time on my Shire Woodworking Club plank entry; but did manage to finish it on time. See separate post regarding the making of the train set below:    Pen Sales Sold a pen out on eBay out of the blue; I had forgot that I had posted pens for sale here and had a moment of panic that I had already sold or given away the […]

Wooden train set for Shire Woodworking Club 2017 pine plank competition

This was my entry in the 2017 Shire Woodworking Club pine plank competition: We received a dressed radiata pine plank (approximately 1500mm x 290mm x 19mm or equivalent). The main rule is: There is no restriction on the number, size, type and design of the entry providing it is used to make one or more toys for the Club. It is to be made predominantly from the timber supplied. Quite a while ago I had bought […]

The Cubby House Turners Woodies Inc – August 2017 Newsletter

Current Cubby House Turners Woodies club newsletter below. Great picture of Ray Elyard in his workshop; I have never managed to create as many streamers during one turning. Geoff Tong showing his segmented segmented lidded box that he presented at the Shire Woodworkers Club the previous week.  Some good looking boxes for show and tell items but still need more general woodwork items. They are getting back into the themed maxi days which I think […]

Workshop Update – Photography experimenting

David, my wife’s 13 year old nephew recently got a new canon EOS camera for his birthday so yesterday I setup my small light box for him to experiment with.   I setup my three lights for him to use; the front one is on a tripod which makes it very flexible. I also provided him with various backgrounds as shown in the photos of keyrings, these are lining I have used for boxes. Since […]

Workshop Update – a bit of turning and buying

Workshop Update – a bit of turning and buying Helped out at a working bee / wood clearout at Shire Woodworking club during the week and was able to restrict myself to only bring a small amount home. The PNG Rosewood block has some major cracks so will need to be cut into pieces for turning. The narrow pieces are oak and I am intending to use these in a chopping board (I have not […]

The Cubby House Turners Woodies Inc – July 2017 Newsletter

Current Cubby House Turners Woodies club newsletter below. Only one member passed away last month; although as the average age of members is 80 this will occur. Some good looking show and tell items but a poor showing on the day plus need more general woodwork items. They are getting back into the themed maxi days which I think is a good idea as long as there is enough warning.

Workshop Update – Resin infused hybrid pen blanks

I thought it was about time that I turned these resin infused hybrid pen blanks that I bought a while ago from The Burl Shed in Perth. Decided to make a Lucinda pen (9mm tube; slightly smaller than a sierra) and some keyrings with this blank: First attempt at turning this was a keyring and the result as below Tried 5 different tools with similar results so realised that all my turning tools needed sharpening. […]
